Silica gel does not expire: sealed and unused it keeps for years, one fill lasts a day to two years depending on the environment, and the material survives three to five full oven cycles in normal use before the decline shows. A pouch announces its own retirement by refusing to turn orange again.

There is no schedule: silica gel fills with the water it meets, not with time. The indicator is the schedule, the oven at 120 C for two to three hours is the reset, and the honest interval runs from 24 hours in open air to years in a tight, dry box.

The storage rule is 1 to 2 grams per litre, but a tackle box opens constantly and takes wet gear, so size by capacity instead: gel holds up to 40 percent of its weight in water, a dripping lure carries about a gram, and a 10 gram pouch buys roughly four soaked lures per recharge.

VCI is real, tested technology: inhibitor molecules evaporate inside a closed box and coat metal in a film a few molecules thick that blocks rust. Its limits are just as real: it needs the lid shut, ignores actual water and salt on your gear, and fades over years without any visible sign.
