The grown-up version of the rule is a US military specification, MIL-D-3464, which defines a desiccant "unit" as the amount that adsorbs at least 3 grams of water vapour at 20 percent relative humidity, 6 grams at 40 percent. One unit is roughly 28 grams of silica gel, an ounce, and packing best practice is about 1.2 units per cubic foot of sealed volume, with a European counterpart, DIN 55474, running the same idea through a longer formula that also counts the cardboard and wood packed alongside, since those hold water too.
Convert the military figure to kitchen units and it lands right on the folk wisdom: 1.2 units per cubic foot is about 34 grams per 28 litres, call it 1.2 grams per litre. The shipping container and the tackle box obey the same arithmetic; only the lid-opening habits differ.
Why a tackle box needs more than the rule says
Here is the part the volume rules quietly assume away. The rule sizes the gel against the moisture in the sealed air, but the air in a small box carries almost nothing: fully saturated air at 25 degrees holds about 23 grams of water per cubic metre, so the air in a 450 millilitre box holds about one hundredth of a gram. If trapped air were the whole problem, a pinch of gel would last a decade.
The real load walks in with you. One lure put away dripping carries around a gram of water, a hundred times the air's entire load. Every opening on a damp bank swaps the box's air for a fresh humid boxful. Salt residue keeps pulling new moisture in for weeks. That is why a tackle box wants many times the static rule: not because the box is big, but because the load keeps arriving.

Are the free 1-gram packets enough?
The shoe-box packets are real silica gel and the recycling instinct is sound, but run the numbers before trusting one with your hooks. Can you use too much?
