"How often" is the natural question and the wrong unit. Ask instead "how full is it", because a desiccant is a container for water, and containers are managed by how much is in them, not by the date. Everything below hangs off that one idea: read the gel, not the calendar.

The indicator is the schedule

Indicating silica gel answers the question for you, continuously. The beads run from orange when empty toward dark green as they fill, and the shift happens bead by bead, so a pouch reads like a gauge: mostly orange, keep fishing; a green tide from the edges, recharge is coming; green throughout, the pouch is full and protecting nothing until the oven empties it. This is the entire management system: glance, and act when the colour says so. No reminder apps, no guessing, and no recharging half-empty gel out of nervousness, which only wastes oven time and wear cycles.

How long it actually takes

The honest answer to "how long between recharges" is a range spanning three orders of magnitude, because the gel's filling speed is set entirely by how much moisture reaches it:

Two practical readings of that table. If your pouch turns green in a fortnight, that is not a bad pouch, it is a message: either a lot of wet gear is going in or the box seal is leaking, and the dose may be undersized for your use. And if it stays orange all season, nothing is wrong either; the box is simply staying dry, which was the goal.

The recharge itself

Emptying the gel is a kitchen job: spread the beads or lay the pouch flat and give it two to three hours at 120 C in an ordinary oven, then let it cool in a closed container, because gel cooling in open air starts drinking the kitchen's humidity immediately. The colour walking back from green to orange is your receipt that it worked.

Temperature limits

Keep indicating gel under about 125 C: hotter ovens destroy the dye while the silica survives, leaving working gel that can no longer report. Above roughly 150 to 200 C the pore structure itself starts to suffer. And skip the microwave for pouches; the fabric or paper can scorch or burst as the moisture flashes to steam, and microwave heating is too uneven to trust for a full reset.

Sun, radiators and airing cupboards come up as gentler alternatives, and they do move some water out, but they rarely get the beads hot enough for a full reset, so the colour, and the capacity, come back only partway. Think of them as topping up the battery, with the oven as the actual charger.

No indicator? Weigh it

Plain white gel works exactly as well and tells you exactly nothing, but a kitchen scale converts it. Saturated silica gel weighs 30 to 40 percent more than dry, so weigh the packet fresh out of the oven, write the number on it, and re-weigh when you wonder: a 50 gram packet reading 65 is full and due. A humidity card or a small hygrometer in the box does the same job from the air's side, with anything creeping past 50 percent relative humidity meaning the gel has stopped keeping up.

When recharging stops working

Recharging is not infinite. Three to five full cycles is the commonly cited span before capacity drops noticeably, though gently used gel can go longer, and the indicator again announces the end on its own: the day a pouch comes out of a full two-to-three-hour session at 120 C still stubbornly green-tinged, it is spent, and a fresh pouch takes over. Physical retirement criteria are simpler still: torn, dirty or oily packets are done regardless of colour.
