Why does silica gel change color?

Indicating silica gel carries a trace of dye that reacts to the water the beads take on. The cobalt-free type is orange when dry and shifts to dark green as it fills. The older blue type uses cobalt chloride and turns pink. The colour tracks the water inside the beads, not the calendar, and it runs in reverse too: recharge the gel in a 120 C oven and the colour comes back along with the capacity.

All three are the same silica underneath. The difference is whether a dye rides along to report on the water. White gel keeps its secrets, which is why the little free packets look identical the day they arrive and the day they die.

What does it mean when silica gel turns green?

It means the beads are full. The water they pulled out of the air is parked inside the pores, and a full bead protects nothing; it just sits there holding what it caught. Green gel is not ruined and not dangerous. It is finished working and waiting for the oven.

One thing worth acting on: get green gel out of warm places. Heat loosens the water it holds, so a saturated pouch in a hot car quietly hands its catch back to the air around your gear.

How does the indicator actually work?

The orange type is impregnated with about 0.2 percent methyl violet, two grams of dye per kilo of beads. As water binds inside the gel, the dye molecules change shape, and molecules that change shape absorb different light: orange drifts toward dark green as the loading climbs.

The old blue type worked on cobalt chemistry instead. Dry cobalt chloride is blue; give the cobalt water molecules to bond with and its coordination changes, and the compound turns pink. Elegant chemistry, but cobalt chloride is the reason blue gel got phased out in the EU over health concerns. Same silica, worse passenger.

When does the colour change happen?

The colour tracks water content, not time. Blue gel flips around 8 percent of its own weight in absorbed water. The orange type shifts gradually, bead by bead, and a pouch shows it unevenly: the beads nearest the mesh and the corners drink first, so green creeps in from the edges while the middle holds out.

That is why there is no fixed clock on it. Loose in damp autumn air, days. In a tight box with gear that goes in dry, months. The gel does not age; it fills.

Can the colour change back?

Yes. The change runs in both directions. Bake the pouch at 120 C for two to three hours and the water leaves, the capacity returns, and the colour walks back from green to orange. The returning colour is your proof the recharge actually worked. And it doubles as an end-of-life gauge: the day a pouch comes out of the oven and refuses to turn orange again, the dye and the gel are spent, and a fresh pouch takes over.

Why is my silica gel not changing colour?

Four reasons, three of them boring and one of them good news:

  • It is white gel: non-indicating silica has no dye and never changes, no matter how much it drinks.
  • The box is doing its job: in a tight box where gear goes in dry, there is barely any water to catch. A pouch that stays orange for months in a closed box is not lazy, it is unemployed.
  • The dye got cooked: recharging hotter than about 125 C destroys the indicator while the silica survives. The gel still works; it just stopped reporting.
  • It is simply early: in a dry season the loading is slow, and the shift from orange toward green takes weeks to become obvious.

Why is my silica gel not changing colour?

Either it is the white non-indicating type, the box is tight and dry so there is little to absorb, the dye was destroyed by recharging hotter than about 125 C, or it simply has not taken on enough water yet. Only the first and third mean you cannot read it.

Is green silica gel ruined?

No. Green just means full. The gel is only spent the day it no longer turns back orange after two to three hours in a 120 C oven.
