Silica gel does not expire. Sealed and unused it keeps for years; suppliers quote two to three as a practical figure, and the real limit is the seal, not the calendar. In use, one fill lasts anywhere from a day in open air to two years in a tight box, and each oven recharge brings the capacity back. "How long does it last" is really three questions wearing one coat: how long does unused gel keep, how long does one fill last in service, and how many times can the oven bring it back before the material gives up. They have three very different answers, so this article takes them one at a time.

On the shelf: it does not expire

Silica gel is amorphous silicon dioxide, one of the most boring, stable materials in your house, and nothing in it goes off. The packets found in a five-year-old shoebox are chemically identical to new ones; the only question is how much moisture they have already swallowed sitting there. Suppliers print a practical shelf life of two to three years on sealed stock, but that number describes the packaging, not the gel: an intact airtight bag keeps the gel empty and ready more or less indefinitely, while a pinhole in the bag can quietly fill it within weeks in a humid warehouse.

So the rule for stored gel is simple: judge the seal, not the date. And if old gel is suspect, the oven answers the question either way, because a recharge resets found packets as well as bought ones.

In use: one fill lasts days to years

Once the gel is working, its clock runs on moisture, not time. The same pouch lasts 24 to 48 hours loose in open air, weeks in a humid coastal tackle box, and up to two years idling in a tight container with dry gear. How many recharges before it is worn?

Here is the number people are usually after. For indicating pouches in normal use, three to five full saturate-and-recharge cycles is the commonly cited span before capacity drops noticeably; industrial users run the same material three to ten cycles before it falls below their thresholds. There is no hard cliff at any particular count, just a slow fade, and how slow depends almost entirely on how the gel is treated in the oven.

What actually wears out

Two things age in an indicating pouch, and heat drives both. The silica's capacity lives in its internal pore structure, and every trip through the oven stresses it a little; lab work comparing regeneration temperatures found that gel dried hot lost capacity fastest over repeated cycles, while gel dried low and slow held up far longer. That makes oven discipline the main lever you own: 120 C does the job, and hotter only buys speed at the price of lifespan. Above about 150 C the damage accelerates, and by 200 C the pore structure is being destroyed outright.

The second aging part is the indicator dye, which dies suddenly rather than gradually: one session over about 125 C and the colour reporting is gone for good, even though the silica underneath may still work. How to tell it is done

Retirement is behavioural, not scheduled. The pouch is spent the day it comes out of a full two-to-three-hour session at 120 C and refuses to turn properly orange again; at that point the dye, the pores, or both have given what they had. The same verdict without an indicator: weigh the gel after recharging, and if it barely lost weight in the oven or stops protecting soon after, it is finished. Torn, dirty or oily pouches retire immediately regardless of colour, since contamination clogs pores no oven can clear.

Recharge or replace?

Recharging wins for as long as it works: the electricity for an oven session costs pennies against a new pouch, and the same bake can dry every pouch you own at once. The honest accounting is that a pouch is a consumable with an unusually long fuse, three to five cycles covering seasons of ordinary fishing, and the refill is the planned end of the road, not a failure. Run each pouch until the orange stops coming back, then swap it and give the new one the same gentle treatment.
