Why is my tackle box wet inside?

In short

A tackle box gets wet inside because warm air holds more water than cold air. Damp air and wet gear get sealed in during the day, and when the box cools overnight the trapped air can no longer carry its moisture, so it condenses on the coldest surfaces inside, the plastic walls and the metal. No leak required, and a waterproof seal makes it worse rather than better, because the seal holds the moisture in. The cure is closing the box dry and keeping the trapped air dry.

You dried your gear, you closed the lid, the box sat untouched on a shelf, and it still opened damp, maybe with proper droplets fogging the underside of the lid. Nothing leaked and nobody is imagining things. The water was in there all along, as vapour, and physics quietly turned it back into liquid. Here is how, and what to change.

Warm air holds more water than cold air

Air carries water vapour the way a sponge carries water: it has a capacity, and the capacity depends on temperature. A cubic metre of air can hold up to about 28 grams of water at 30 degrees, 23 grams at 25 degrees, and only around 8 grams at 8 degrees. Cool the air down and its capacity shrinks under it.

In the open, that surplus becomes dew on the grass. In a closed tackle box it becomes droplets on the inside of the lid, because in a sealed volume the amount of vapour is locked the moment you close the lid. The air cannot dump its load anywhere except onto the surfaces around it.

The overnight cycle in a closed box

Play the tape of an ordinary fishing day. The box stands open on the bank on a mild damp morning, breathing in air near its full water load. It rides home in a warm car boot, warmer still. Then it lands in a shed or garage, and the night pulls the temperature down ten or fifteen degrees. Somewhere on the way down, the trapped air crosses the point where it is fully loaded, its dew point, and from there every further degree of cooling squeezes water out as liquid. It lands on whatever is coldest, which is first the plastic shell and then the metal in the trays.

Come morning the box warms up, some of the droplets evaporate back into the trapped air, and the following night the same water condenses out again. The moisture never leaves; it commutes. Where the water came from

Condensation is the delivery mechanism, not the source. The water got in one of a few ways, and each has its own fix:

Why a waterproof box still gets wet inside

A waterproof gasket answers a different question than the one you are asking. It keeps rain and spray out, and it does that fine. But a seal works in both directions: whatever moisture is inside when the lid clicks shut is now staying, with no ventilation to carry it off. A sealed box closed around damp gear is a terrarium.

Sealed boxes also breathe more than their name suggests. When the box cools, the air inside contracts and the pressure drops, and that slight vacuum pulls a little outside air past the gasket. If the outside air is humid, each day-night cycle imports a bit more moisture that then has no way back out. Waterproof is worth having, but only together with the habit of closing the box dry.

How to keep it dry

Everything follows from the physics above:

  • Close it dry: the box should shut on dry gear and, as far as you can manage, on dry air. An evening with the lid open indoors before storage costs nothing.
  • Kill the temperature swings: an indoor shelf keeps the trapped air above its dew point, so the vapour stays vapour.
  • Put a desiccant inside: a drying agent removes the vapour before the night can condense it. That is what silica gel is for, and how much you need has its own article.
  • Rinse after salt: otherwise the residue keeps feeding moisture back onto the metal no matter what else you do.
