That is VCI, and unlike a lot of tackle-aisle magic it has decades of industrial history behind it. What VCI actually is

Volatile corrosion inhibitors are compounds with a useful contradiction built in: they are solid or liquid, but they evaporate slightly at room temperature, the way a bar of soap smells without ever visibly shrinking. Blend them into a carrier, paper, polythene film, foam, or the walls of a plastic box, and the carrier becomes a slow-release source that keeps a closed container's air faintly charged with inhibitor molecules for years.

The industry has wrapped machine parts, gun safes and shipped engines in VCI paper and film since the 1940s. The fishing application is the same trick in a smaller room: mould the inhibitor into a tackle tray, close the lid, and every hook in it sits in protected air.

How an invisible vapour stops rust

Rust is an electrochemical reaction that needs water and oxygen touching bare steel. The VCI molecules drifting around the closed box are attracted to metal surfaces and settle onto them, building a film a few molecules thick, thousands of times thinner than cling film. That film changes the surface: it repels condensed water, blocks oxygen's path to the steel, and shuts down the tiny anode and cathode sites where the corrosion current would flow.

Two properties follow directly from the mechanism, and they explain almost everything about using VCI right. The film only builds up where the vapour can accumulate, so the box has to be closed; leave it open and the molecules drift away instead of settling. And the film is not a permanent coating: open the box and the layer begins to desorb, gone within hours by the maker's own description. The protection exists only inside the closed container, which is also why parts come out clean, with nothing to wipe off.

The VCI tackle boxes: Zerust and Rustrictor

In fishing, VCI arrives mainly as two names. Zerust is the inhibitor maker, selling capsules, drawer liners and tabs you add to any box. Rustrictor is Flambeau's line of tackle boxes with the Zerust chemistry moulded into the plastic itself, so the whole shell is the slow-release source. Flambeau markets it as cutting rust by up to 95 percent and lasting about five years.

Does it work? The honest answer is yes, within its rules. This is not homeopathy: VCI's effect on steel corrosion is documented in industrial studies, there are standardised lab tests for it (the vapour-inhibiting-ability jar test, codified in NACE standards, descends from 1970s military specs), and hands-on tests of the tackle boxes have found visibly less corrosion than in plain boxes, with angler forums broadly agreeing. Treating VCI as snake oil would be as wrong as treating it as magic.

How long does it really last?

Here the marketing and the data sheets part ways a little. The five-year figure comes from the manufacturer, describing ideal conditions: clean, dry metal in a box that stays closed. Zerust's own technical sheets rate their vapor capsules at one to two years in a sealed enclosure and their packets at six months, and every supplier agrees on the pattern: the more often the container opens, the faster the vapour vents and the shorter the effective life.

A tackle box is the frequently-opened case by definition, so the sensible reading is: years of help, not a five-year force field. And the awkward part is that you get no signal when it fades. The film is invisible, the depletion is invisible, and there is no home test, so the first indication that the protection has run down tends to be the thing it was bought to prevent.

What VCI does not do

The mechanism protects dry steel from damp air. It has no answer to the other ways water attacks a tackle box:

  • It does not remove water. A lure that goes in wet sits in its own puddle, and corrosion can start there before the molecular film re-establishes. Zerust's own guidance says to clean and dry gear before it goes in.
  • It does not remove salt. Salt residue keeps rebuilding its electrolyte film from the air's moisture; the vapour does not neutralise it. Rinsing is still on you.
  • It does not dry the air. The humidity you trap in the box stays there; the film just argues with it at the metal's surface.
  • It cannot be checked. No colour, no gauge, no residue. You trust the date on the box, and the date is a marketing number.

Is the vapour safe?

Handled normally, yes. VCI paper and film are considered safe to touch bare-handed, and the concentrations in a box's air are tiny. The chemistry has a history worth knowing: the classic inhibitor used from the 1940s paired amines with nitrites, a combination flagged in the 1970s because it can form nitrosamines, and that is why many modern formulations advertise themselves as nitrite-free. The consumer products sold today, including the tackle-box lines, are marketed as non-toxic and food-safe adjacent, with the usual boring advice of washing hands after handling large amounts.

VCI or silica gel?

The comparison anglers actually search is VCI against the desiccant approach, and the honest framing is that they attack different halves of the same problem. One coats the metal, the other dries the air.
